A shopping centre’s culture resides in the hearts and souls of its people, and Riverside Mall is so much more than the bricks and mortar from which it was built twenty years ago; it represents a bastion of suburban culture and the retail, social and community centre of Mpumalanga. Constructed from a montage of memories for the loyal customers who have supported the centre since it opened its doors in September 1998, in a semi-rural setting, as a community centre where they would converge for shopping, cultural activity and social interaction; these walls have seen many a first date and friendships formed over cups of coffee shared; countless celebrations hosted and many a matric dance dress and suit sourced. The ebb and flow of Riverside Mall, over the last twenty years, is a reflection of the supportive community, without whom its doors would not be open today. This Heritage Month, we celebrate the journey of Mpumalanga’s first fully fledged shopping centre, and the establishment that has enhanced the lives of those in the surrounding community.
Offering something for everyone, Riverside Mall continues to be a destination for the whole family, and perhaps one of the most poetic illustrations of Riverside Mall’s longevity are the generations of loyal patrons who frequented the mall as children, and who now bring their children to the mall to make new memories in the heart of the Riverside Park City Improvement District.
It has enthralled the community over the last two decades with exciting events and entertainment. Riverside Mall has evolved with the times and afforded many community members job opportunities as well as a platform to grow, succeed and inspire others. There is an extraordinary collaborative spirit when you are learning and growing; and with the love and support of locals, many stores have flourished and expanded with the same customers who attending the mall’s opening in 1998. A handful of stores who celebrate two decades in the mall include FotoFirst, The Market, Rivermall Pharmacy (now The Local Choice Pharmacy), Detroit Spur and The Biltong Barrow. Charmaine Von Abo, centre manager of Riverside Mall says “We are humbled that we have been part of the Lowveld community for 2 decades. We have had tenants that have been on this journey with us for many years, some who have been with us since our inception back in September 1998 and have helped contribute to what the mall is today.” With its sights set on sustainability, Riverside Mall takes its responsibility to care for the environment in which it is built very seriously. In a bid to become more energy efficient and eco-friendly, Riverside Mall management has changed all the lighting to LEDs, installed solar panels, planted ‘dry gardens’ to curb excess water usage, installed water tanks for rain water harvesting as well as waterless urinals and employed the services of a recycling company. Still one of the largest shopping complexes in Mpumalanga, Riverside Mall endeavours to continue establishing meaningful and sustainable relationships with the community surrounding the mall; and is committed to contributing to the people who have kept the spirit of the centre alive, providing a platform for celebration, entertainment and engagement.
